When I think about Christmas or the Holiday Season, the main things that come through my mind are sparkle, decorations, and hot chocolate. I love hot chocolate more than you can imagine, I actually love it so much that I like to eat all that mix with the spoon without milk or water.
Every season I buy a hot chocolate mix from the store, and this year I’ve tried to make my own, and, surprise surprise, it’s way cheaper. I’ve been making research on Pinterest and different food blogs just to find the perfect recipe for hot chocolate. At some point, I’ve actually found one, but, of corse didn’t save it and it got lost. I wanted to find something simple enough to just be able to make it every time without having to look up the recipe.
I kept on looking for the perfect recipe until a few days ago it just got to my mind that I should try to improvise. I should try to make it, see if I like it or not, and then just change a few things until I got the perfect taste. After reading so many recipes I knew that I should use chocolate, cocoa, powdered milk, and powdered sugar. Since I didn’t know the ratio that I should use, for the first time I made a smaller batch and used the same quantity for all the ingredients. I just doubled the chocolate chips because I thought that after blending it will be half the size. So, I took one part powdered sugar, one part powdered milk, one part cocoa and 2 parts chocolate chips. I didn’t really expect it, but it actually turned out really good. Right now I don’t know if I would actually change anything. In some recipes, I even read something about cornstarch to make the hot chocolate creamier, something like a really thin pudding. Sounds tempting and maybe I will even try it and come with a later update, but for now, this mix, in my opinion, is really tasty as it is.
I put everything in my food processor but feel free to use a blender for this if you want. Actually you don’t even need any of these, just leave the chocolate chips as they are, they will melt anyway. You can use any type of chocolate you like or you have in your home. These are exactly the type of recipes that I love the most, these types that are not very strict, you can use what you have in your home or can easily be found in the nearest store.
Think about this recipe as a perfect Christmas gift, for friends or your colleagues. Put the mix in a jar, tie a ribbon and write a note, simple as that. It’s a perfect, cute and homemade gift and I really think that people will appreciate it. I really think that a homemade gift is always a better idea because somehow you send a message that you put your effort into this gift (but let’s be honest, it takes only 2-3 minutes to make this mix, so there’s really not any effort).
Store your mix in a container or a glass jar and then put it in the fridge, are somewhere cold (maybe your pantry). I chose to store in the fridge just because I used chocolate and didn’t want to melt or something. Of course it’s not necessary to store it, you can also make it really quick when you want to drink some. In a pot just add 2tbsp of chocolate chips, 1tbsp cocoa, 1 tbsp powdered milk, 1tbsp powdered sugar and 2 cups of milk. Quick and easy! But, I still think that it easier to make a bigger batch (especially if you have kids) and always have some hot chocolate mix on hand.
Homemade hot chocolate mix
Ingredients
- ½ Cup Chocolate chips Cold or frozen
- ¼ Cup Powdered sugar
- ¼ Cup Cocoa
- ¼ Cup Powdered milk
Instructions
- Put all the ingredients in a food processor and blend them very well until everything is combined. You'll know it's ready when you won't see/feel any chocolate bits in the mixture.
- When your mixture is well mixed and everything is combined, just transfer it in a clean container and store it in your fridge.
Notes
- Using cold or frozen chocolate chips it will be easier to blend.
- I like to keep my hot cocoa mix in the fridge since I normally store my chocolate chips and powdered milk in the fridge.
- To prepare your hot chocolate, just put one cup of milk in a pot, and add 3 tbsp of hot cocoa mix and stir well until everything is combined and melted.
